Shipping Infectious Substances by Air (IATA) |
This course covers the fundamentals of shipping infectious substances and diagnostic specimens by air, and discusses the requirements of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Our 7 step approach encompasses all of the activities which must be addressed when preparing a hazardous material for shipment.
- Infectious Substances, Category A (UN 2814 and UN 2900),
- Biological Substances, Category B (UN 3373),
- Patient Specimens, and
- Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice), Class 9 (UN 1845)
This course has been updated to the 51st Edition (2010) of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, including changes to the shipping documentation for Packing Instruction 650.

Who Should Take This Course

- Selects packaging or packages infectious substances and biological substances;
- Completes a shipper's declaration or other paperwork associated with the transport of infectious substances and biological substances;
- Loads, unloads, or handles dangerous goods, including infectious substances and biological substances;
- Is responsible for the safety of transporting dangerous goods.
Objectives
Upon completion of this online course, participants should be able to:
- properly label and mark dangerous goods containers for shipment;
- complete shipper's declaration for dangerous goods; and
- select proper packaging for dangerous goods.

Instructor
Linda R. Taylor, PE
Ms. Taylor is a faculty member in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Technology at NC State University and is the former Director of Environmental Health & Safety at North Carolina State University's IES. She has over 20 years of engineering experience working in industry and environmental consulting, most recently with Progress Energy. She has provided instruction on a wide range of environmental, health, and safety topics at conferences and training courses, both live and online, and she is an OSHA authorized instructor.
Ms. Taylor received a BS in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and a MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
