FAQs about How to Become a Miner

What is MSHA?

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) works to prevent death, illness, and injury from mining and promote safe and healthful workplaces for U.S. miners.

What is MSHA Training?

"Training is an essential part of MSHA's mission to keep miners safe and healthy. Our goal is to help the mining industry develop high-quality training programs, and to strengthen and modernize training through collaboration with industry stakeholders." - MSHA

What is MSHA Certification?

People often use the term "MSHA Certification" to refer to training and being approved to work at a mining facility. MSHA Certification also applies to Part 48 instructors, who must be approved by MSHA and their certifcation is kept on file by MSHA.

Who Needs MSHA Training?

Training is an important part of being a miner. MSHA requires all miners receive initial training and annual refresher training.

How to Get MSHA Certification

If you want to receive training to work at a mine, simply take the required training course (and yes, we'd love you to take our training, but please check with your employer and/or the mine to ensure you get the right training). To become certified as a MSHA approved instructor, contact MSHA.

Can you Do MSHA Training Online?

Yes, you can take MSHA training online through our live online virtual classroom and you can use our on-demand training materials.

MSHA Training Requirements

New miners must receive 24 hours of introductory safety training (although new miners may begin work after an initital 4 hour introductory training as long as they only work under the direct supervisiion of an experienced miner). Miners must receive 8 hours of annual refresher training to maintain compliance with MSHA regulations. Part 48 miners must receive their training from a MSHA approved trainer who has been certified by MSHA. Part 46 miners must be trained by someone deemed a "competent person" by the mine operator.

MSHA Training Cost

We strive to provide high quality safety training at an affordable price. Our on-demand training is our most affordable training option but places more responsibility on your end (supervision of training, signing of training documentation, etc), while our live online instructor-led training offers a more turn-key option (our MSHA-approved instructor supervises your trainig and provides signed training documentation).
